The most scenic Alpine roads of Switzerland part I : from Andermatt to Furkapass
Before Winter closing of most Alpine passes, here is to you a report of 120 km driving through the most majestic Alpine district of central Switzerland (map adapted from Google Earth).
The tour cuts through 3 Alpine passes: Furkapass (2429 m.s.l.), Grimselpass (2165 m.s.l.) and Sustenpass (2264 m.s.l.).
Enjoy the first part: at dawn from Hospental to Furkapass!
Realp is the last town left behind before the road, closed in winter, turns into a steep uphill.
From the Furkapass , below in the valley the river Reuss flows towards Lucerne.
Leaving Furkapass behind, the next stop is by Hotel Belvedere. In front of it: the Rhone Glacier, soon in part 2

… to drive, a good place to drive, a perfect place to let the wheels climb steep up-hills pulled by hundreds of horses …ehm…just a little futuristic moment 😉 .. I bet it is also wonderful to walk.

Another place to add to my list. I’ve been trying to simply get to a road called “The Tail of the Dragon” for years, and being here in the US, relatively close by. But I may trade my priorities for this apparent incredible route you’ve posted – I’d like to think my desires are not just “in my dreams!” M

I found the tail of the dragon here . I am sure it is great fun motorbiking on it but… I see no Alps, no glaciers, no Swiss raclette 😉 And speed limit here is 80 km/h … not 30 mph …
Just keep in mind you can drive these three mountain passes only in summer… sometimes it means only from May to October.

Do you know the exact dates when these passes (furka, susten) will reopen from winter? Hou could I find this out? Thank you and congratulations!
