The end of the road trip at Sustenpass (CH), a new beginning to catch in 2014 ?

Still some mountain road to climb …

… the last bends before reaching the last pass of the tour, the Sustenpass.

Time for a walk towards the last glacier, at the base of Sustenjoch …

… and when the alpine path gets too long, the zoom comes to help.

And after the best raclette ever at the Berggasthaus Sustenpass Hospiz, time to drive down, back to the valley, back to Zurich

Winter snow and ice and wind will keep Furka, Grimsel and Sustenpass closed … until the next Spring. See you there in 2014 ?

Black and white, black and white on the Furka cogwheel steam railway

If I was ever a fan of rail transport, this HG 3/4 would have been my favourite.

Black smoke from the firebox, white steam from the pressure boiler.

A quick stop to tank water and coal, and on the track again!

This jewel runs through Gletsch, between Furkapass and Grimselpass.

Sharp your eyes from the Rhone glacier down into the valley and you might see it climbing up the steep track between the road and the Rhone river.

On the wheel traces of Goldfinger’s James Bond: from Furkapass down to Gletsch

After Furkapass, close to where the most famous Aston Martin ever drove down the valley

take your chance to explore one of the most spectacular roads of Switzerland.

Sharp bends and steep down-hills

to reach the young, rapid Rhone river

cutting through Gletsch, at the crossroads of the Grimsel Pass (leading to the Bernese Oberland) and the Furka Pass (leading to Central Switzerland).

The most scenic Alpine roads of Switzerland part I : from Andermatt to Furkapass

Before Winter closing of most Alpine passes, here is to you a report of 120 km driving through the most majestic Alpine district of central Switzerland (map adapted from Google Earth).

artboghi on the swiss roads MAP

The tour cuts through 3 Alpine passes: Furkapass (2429 m.s.l.), Grimselpass (2165 m.s.l.) and Sustenpass (2264 m.s.l.).

Enjoy the first part: at dawn from Hospental to Furkapass!

Realp is the last town left behind before the road, closed in winter, turns into a steep uphill.

From the Furkapass , below in the valley the river Reuss flows towards Lucerne.

Leaving Furkapass behind, the next stop is by Hotel Belvedere. In front of it: the Rhone Glacier, soon in part 2
