Closed in 1957, the last leper colony of Europe was located in the fortress of Spinalonga. It counted up to 400 members

A trip to Spinalonga
In the gulf of Mirabello, east of Iraklion, the peninsula of Kalydon is topped with the fortress of Spinalonga. First Venetian citadel, then Arab, then leper clony, nowadays Spinalonga is a great tourist attraction reachable from Plaka or Elounda or Agios Nikolaos.

Rethymno: the Fortezza
The long distance between Chania and Iraklion pushed the Republic of Venice to build a strong fortress in between. Nowadays the Castle of Rethymno is the largest and best preserved citadel in Crete.
