La sesta terra: Segesta

The eastern shores from Genova, known as “Levante (where the sun rises)” have some of the most famous sea locations of Italy: Portofino, Camogli, Cinque Terre (Five lands). The cozy Sestri Levante earns the title of “Sesta Terra” (Sixth land). Visit it off season and don’t miss Polpo Mario and El Pescador for gorgeous fish dinners, Luca bakeries for the best focaccia ever and Gelato naturale for an exquisite ice cream made of local milk from the Ligurian cow race “cabannina“.

Segesta (Sestri Levante) is the queen of fairy tales: Hans Christian Handersen visited the town in 1833. He found about the local myth of Segesta, the mermaid, and her lover, the Triton. In 1837 published his most famous fairy tale ever: The Little Mermaid. He also named the western bay of Sestri Levante as “Fairy tales bay”. Since 1998, every year in June, Sestri Levante celebrates the Handersen literature prize.

An early morning hike from Sestri Levante to punta Manara: cool and far from the weekend crowds on the beach. Olive trees, cork oaks and Mediterranean trees. The luxurious vegetation on the path up to the 200 m.s.l of Punta Manara is a beautiful travel companion.

The bay of silence

The bay of silence opens on the east side of Sestri Levante (Italy). Its name fits (only) early mornings or off season times. The colorful Segesta (Sestri Levante, Latin name) and its beach behind, the blue Ligurian sea in front : an unforgettable bath.
